5 Ways to Add Personality to Your Porch and Garden

5 Ways to Add Personality to Your Porch and Garden

Some of my favorite outdoor spaces are the little corners that feel personal—a welcoming porch, a well-loved flowerpot, or a garden path with something unexpected tucked beside it.

You don’t need a complete makeover to create that feeling. A few thoughtfully chosen pieces can bring color, movement, and a little storybook charm to a space you already enjoy.

1. Give a favorite flowerpot a playful detail

A garden pick is a simple way to dress up a pot without rearranging everything. Tuck one beside your plants where its shape stands out against the foliage.

A rusted metal peace symbol, bird, butterfly, or flower can give even an ordinary container a personality of its own. Choose something that makes you smile, and leave enough room around it to enjoy the detail.

2. Bring gentle movement to your porch

There’s something relaxing about watching a hanging piece move with the breeze. A Breeze Dancer or a Garden Heart that turns gently can give you a small reason to pause when you step outside.

Choose a secure hanging spot with room for the piece to move freely. A place you can see from your favorite chair—or through a window—lets you enjoy it throughout the day.

3. Make use of a plain wall

Porch and garden decorating doesn’t have to stay at ground level. A bare wall can become a lovely backdrop for a handmade hanging piece.

My Big Sur Windows combine rusted metal and ceramic beads in an open design that lets the wall behind them become part of the display. Give a piece a little breathing room so its shape, texture, and bead colors are easy to see.

4. Repeat a color you love

A little color can help different parts of an outdoor space feel connected. Start with a shade you already enjoy in a cushion, flowerpot, or plant, then echo it in the ceramic beads of a hanging piece.

You don’t need an exact match. A few related colors can tie a corner together while still letting each handmade detail have its own character. Rusted metal adds a warm, earthy texture alongside those colors.

5. Choose pieces that tell a little of your story

The decorations you enjoy most often have a connection to something you love. It might be a hummingbird that reminds you of mornings in the garden, a vintage trailer that brings back camping memories, or a heart chosen simply because it feels right.

Growing up on the Monterey Peninsula and spending my early summers camping in Big Sur shaped my love of welcoming outdoor spaces. Those memories still find their way into the pieces I make for Suzanne’s Farmhouse.

Your porch and garden can hold those kinds of connections, too. Start with one corner and one piece you love. Sometimes that’s all it takes to make a familiar spot feel special.
